Definition of Concert

According to KBBI, a concert is a musical performance in public; a performance by a group of musicians created from several individual compositions. Basically, this music performance title is an artist’s embodiment of his works which are introduced directly to the general public. Apart from that, concerts are also an artist’s monetization effort.

Some examples of top artists from the west who have held concerts in Indonesia recently include COLDPLAY and Charlie Puth. Then there are ONE OK ROCK, Blackpink, and NCT from Asia as well as Indonesian artists such as Niki Zefanya, Hindia, and Vierratale.

The word “concert” comes from the Italian ‘ concerto’ and the Latin ‘ concertare’, which means to struggle; compete with other people. The first concert was held in the 17th century by a violinist named John Banister at his residence in Whitefairs, London in 1672. At that time, audiences were required to pay an entrance ticket to be able to watch. Since then, concerts began to be held everywhere.

An artist named Thomas Britton held weekly concerts in Clerkenwell and at that time audiences were asked to buy tickets with a year’s subscription system. For a fee of 10 shillings for one year, audiences were free to enjoy as many concerts as they wanted. Other artists such as Anne Danican Philidor, who is a composer from France, held concerts in certain places intended for the nobility only.

Benefits of Watching a Concert

For some people, the euphoria of watching a concert is very different from just listening to music from platforms like Spotify or watching MVs on YouTube. From a broader perspective, apart from giving a feeling of luxury and happiness, watching a concert can have a positive impact that can be seen from a psychological and social relationship perspective.

Psychological Aspect

For those of you K-Drama lovers , you must have watched Yumi’s Cell, right? In season 1, one of Yumi’s sellers, Endorphin , is seen as a band at a concert. If it is related to real life, endorphin hormones are real. Watching concerts can stimulate the body to produce the hormones endorphins, oxytocin and dopamine which trigger feelings of happiness or euphoria , thereby reducing anxiety, depression, stress and pain.

Aspects of Self-Kowledge

Watching a concert can be intended as a way of thanking yourself for everything you have gone through so far. This term is known as self-reward. With self-reward, you can create a sense of self-acceptance such as gratitude, self-love, respect, recognition and pride in your own achievements to continue surviving. These feelings can be a way to get to know yourself better, or what is called self-knowledge. By knowing yourself better, you will be able to face the world with all the tests that life presents and will be better at placing yourself and managing your own mental health. Say thank you to yourself, okay?

Aspects of Social Relations

Generally, a group of fans has a community of big fans based on a sense of empathy and friendship towards each other who have the same interests or idols. This community is called a fandom . Being in the same fandom environment while watching a concert will encourage the desire to interact and form new relationships with strangers. In terms of social relationships, watching a concert has good benefits because you will be encouraged to expand your friendships by interacting, trying to communicate and daring to get out of your comfort zone.

Bad Impact of Watching a Concert

Apart from having benefits, watching concerts also has several negative impacts if not handled wisely. Such as chaos at the concert location, hearing loss due to loud noise, or even the triggering of PCD ( Post Depression Concert) and FOMO ( Fear of Missing Out ) disorders .

Aspects of Order

Due to excessive enthusiasm, it is not uncommon for chaos to arise at concerts due to several reasons, such as the following:

  • The flow of preparations up to the day of the concert was not yet effective and orderly
  • Lack of tight security from the staff team and security team
  • Lack of audience self-awareness to be orderly and according to the rules
  • Lack of self-control over overwhelming feelings of excessive enthusiasm
  • There are cases of scams or fraudulent tickets being sold

Some of these things can cause the concert atmosphere to not be conducive and can cause commotion such as pushing and shoving until someone faints or is trampled, disputes between individuals, and so on. You’d better be careful and stay orderly!

Health Aspect

Reporting from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), loud sounds produced from music concerts have a noise level of around 105 – 110 dBA. Noise at this level can harm the eardrum, which is a thin membrane caused by high pressure. In addition, noise can damage the small hair cells in the cochlea which function to convert sound into electrical signals to the brain. Damage to the cochlea will reduce the ability to hear. What’s worse, noise in concert areas can also cause tinnitus problems, which is a condition where a person hears a ringing sound in the ears.

Psychological Aspect

Watching a concert, if not handled wisely, can give rise to a psychological disorder called Fear of Missing Out or FOMO. This means that someone is afraid of being “left behind” by other people because they are unable to follow the trends or phenomena that exist at that time. At first, a person will start to compare himself with other people, then start to feel obsessed, afraid and anxious about not being able to follow existing trends and maintain his good image . Sufferers will tend to check their cellphones many times to check any news so that other activities in their lives will be greatly disrupted due to difficulty concentrating.

There is also the term Post Concert Depression (PCD) known recently. This term refers to post-concert psychological disorders which are symptoms of depression where a person will feel the following things:

  • Deeply sad and gloomy
  • Want to turn back time at a concert
  • Deep longing
  • Worried that he wouldn’t be able to feel the euphoria anymore
  • Feel empty

This happens because before and during the concert, the person feels overexcited. So after the concert ends, a person will feel empty and something is missing in their life. In fact, even though watching a concert may be a once-in-a-lifetime moment, believe me that happiness in this world doesn’t only take the form of your idol’s concert, but can take the form of other small things. Concerts aren’t everything.

Tips for Watching Concerts

The negative effects of watching a concert can still be prevented by preparing the following things:

  • Make sure the ticket broker/jastip is trusted. You have to find out the ticket seller’s information, such as the seller’s personal data, and try to meet him face to face.
  • Prepare your luggage carefully and don’t leave anything behind so that your trip and preparation are effective.
  • Increase self-awareness to be orderly. A conducive concert will create a pleasant atmosphere to enjoy together. The audience is happy, your idol is happy.
  • Better self-control. Understand that it’s not only you who wants to make your dream of watching a concert come true, but other people do the same. Excessive excitement will not make you superior to other people. Respect other people and remain orderly during the event, OK?

Of course there are some things that may be out of our control, everything still goes according to God’s plan. However, there is nothing wrong with us as humans trying to the maximum point we can. An orderly and conducive concert will benefit all parties, starting from the promoter and staff, the idols performing their work and the audience who are safe and secure at their destination and home. Hopefully your wishlist for watching a concert can be fulfilled and don’t forget to stay orderly and comply with existing procedures and rules!
