During the Hijrah journey from Mecca to Medina, Prophet Muhammad SAW and his companions chose to hide in a cave located on Mount Thawr. When about to enter the cave, the Prophet Muhammad SAW saw a large dog lying in front of the cave door. The Prophet’s friends were worried and afraid that the dog would bark and disturb their safety. However, the Prophet Muhammad SAW taught them that the dog would not bother them and instead would protect them from harm. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) pointed out that the dog is loyal and obedient to its owner, and that the dog will never allow those who seek kindness to be hurt. After they managed to get out of the cave, the Prophet Muhammad gave food and drink to the dog. The dog is then considered a meritorious animal and has an important role in protecting the safety of the Prophet Muhammad and his companions. This story shows that even though there are rules against keeping dogs, we can still respect and treat dogs well. We can take the example of the Prophet Muhammad SAW in giving attention and respect to the dog.
