One of the endemic animals that can only be found on this island is the proboscis monkey, a long-nosed primate that lives along large rivers. Proboscis monkeys belong to the great ape family (Cercopithecidae) which are characterized by long, red noses in males, and short and brown noses in females. Proboscis monkeys also have brownish gray hair, long tails, and cheek pouches for storing food. <\/p>

Proboscis monkeys are herbivorous animals that eat leaves, fruit, flowers and shoots from various types of trees. They usually live in large groups of 10-30 individuals, with one dominant male and several females and their young. Proboscis monkeys are active during the day and sleep in trees at night.
